What is a Sworn Translation?

Sworn translation (also known as certified translation or official translation) is the type of translation of documents that is required by the official authorities and/or for official purposes.

Is an electronic sworn translation possible?

It could be personal documents like the birth or marriage certificate, a university diploma, tax reports, bank statements, criminal proceeding files, medical reports and other.

Who is a sworn translator?

Sworn translator is a professional certified to do sworn translations. Each country establishes its own regulations of the admission/naming process, therefore, it’s common that a country would admit only translations made by translators certified in that country. I have been named sworn translator in both Spain and the Czech Republic, which means that I can do certified translations recognized in both countries.

What does a sworn translation look like in the Czech Republic?

In the Czech Republic, the translation must be attached to the original document or its certified copy. Only if neither of these are possible, a simple copy of the original is allowed. A translator’s clause must be printed on the last page and the translation is to be stamped and signed in the appropriate places. Different rules apply to the . electronic translation.

Is it possible to make an electronic court translation?

It is possible in both Spain and the Czech Republic. Just like in case of the printed translation, the electronic translation must be attached to the original document. However, this type of translation cannot be stamped and signed with the physical stamp and signed with a pen, therefore, an electronic signature and a time stamp are to be used.

An electronic translation with the electronic signature comes in the format PDF/A and it is to be sent always electronically (e-mail, data box…). The signature can only be verified if the file with the translation is opened in an appropriate software (such as Acrobat Reader). It’s not possible to verify the signature from a printed e-translation.

My electronic sworn translation bear also my name and a date of signature. However, same rules apply – the e-signature cannot be verified if you print the translation. However, this type of translation saves a lot of time as it doesn’t need to be delivered by regular mail.

What are the prices of sworn translations?

In general, the prices of sworn translations are higher than simple (non-certified) translation. While anyone can decide to be a translator, many countries establish very high requirements for becoming a sworn translator. Those include legal and language education, experience, high expertise and liability. Sworn translators have invested a lot of time and financial resources into their profession. All the above reflects in the prices of sworn translations.
